Tricks of the trade
With the cost of equipment skyrocketing in this field of research I have found cheaper methods that work as well as store bought electronics. First I must say there are some equipment that is a necessity for all ghosthunters. These are a decent digital recorder with a USB port for uploading to your computer, An EMF meter or K-2 Meter, A digital camera (Point and shoot or DSLR) it must be at least a 6 Megapixal camera, phone cameras I avoid as the picture size is usually too small and when you try to enlarge the picture it distorts the image. Although I don't use this item much I do have a laser grid pen, I have better luck with an IR camcorder and light. There are two audio programs I use that are free downloads the first is Acoustica and the second is Audicity. Acoustica is easier to cut and paste and Audicity has a whole lot of filters to clean up audio. Another must have piece of equipment is two way radio's. An Ovulis or SB-7 spiritbox is a handy piece of equipment also.
First why spend around $100.-$200. for a rem-pod to ionize the air when you can spend $30. for a stun gun and send a couple zaps into the air, this will place energized ions in the air for the spirits to feed off of and you will get better EVP responses. Second if you are doing a cryptid research (BIGFOOT, DOGMAN ect...) you can use standard rat traps with a trip wire and glow sticks to let you know when the perimeter has been breached, these glow sticks will light up the woods in the dark and the snap of the trap you will hear from base camp. I use 10 Lb fishing line for a trip wire, sturdy enough to set off the trap but light enough it will break in the process causing no harm to whatever sets it off. This is an inexpensive alternative to a $300. electronic perimeter device for those just starting out. Why buy an electronic barometer at $200-$300 when you can get one from Walmart in the garden section for $15 with a remote, carry around the remote with the base station at home base camp. These are great for residential jobs and will also tell you ambient temperature, moon phase, time of day.
